Challenging Inequalities event for organisations exploring inclusion
Event details
If the organisation you represent is interested in identifying, understanding, and addressing inequalities that impact service users, staff, and volunteers, then this event is for you.
One way we explore the topic is through the Challenging Inequalities Toolkit. The toolkit is a self-assessment tool, co-designed by local people with lived experience, community experts, and professionals from across Islington. Although framed around mental health, it is a resource that all organisations can use to help build a more inclusive space. It offers practical steps, reflective questions, and examples of good practice to help services become more inclusive, culturally competent, and accessible.
The first two chapters of the toolkit covered race/ethnicity and LGBTQI+. The third chapter will explore disability.
Whether you are just beginning to explore these issues or looking to strengthen existing efforts, the toolkit provides a framework for creating a more inclusive service.
Our method
We invite participants to consider adopting one small change to take forward over the coming year.
For a large organisation such as a council or NHS department, that might mean developing a more consistent framework for capturing demographic data within contract monitoring. Or perhaps building opportunities to directly involve residents in service development with your senior leadership team. Either change would make it easier for a large statutory organisation to identify groups that are not accessing their services.
As a smaller community-based organisation, you might do a really good job of reaching certain groups but might struggle to reach others. You might make a small change to make your service more accessible to groups not currently using your services.
It’s often small changes that make services more inclusive. Whatever it is, these little adjustments can motivate, encourage, and facilitate inclusion.
We look forward to welcoming you on Thursday 20 November to share knowledge, best practices, and new ideas which foster equality across the borough.
