Mental health support services for migrant communities in Islington

We interviewed 73 residents from migrant communities who were living with mental health issues find out what their experiences were of accessing the support available in the borough.

Summary

  • Despite high levels of need, awareness of services remains low amongst residents.
  • Some clients only go to the GP when they can no longer manage, so GPs need to take their concerns seriously, and refer them on to appropriate support. GP endorsement is very important for members of these communities.
  • The organisations that support these residents need to be adequately resourced. This includes expanding the provision of mother tongue counselling services.
