Oral health in Islington care homes

We visited six homes, speaking to 46 residents, 24 relatives and 31 staff. We wanted to see how residents were supported with their oral health and whether there was any room for improvement.

Summary

  • Residents in the homes we visited were generally well supported with care of their teeth and dentures. Staff were well trained in oral health issues and good practice was in evidence across all of the homes.
  • We felt that residents and relatives could be given more information about mouth care and oral health issues generally.
  • More could be done to encourage access to preventative dental services. Dental check ups play a key role in keeping the mouth healthy.
