The contract to deliver medical services at Hanley Primary Care Centre will not be renewed with the current provider

Healthwatch Islington's Chief Executive, Emma Whitby, observed the meeting at which the decision was taken and was impressed by the robustness of the process.

Hanley Primary Care Centre is a GP service that is currently provided by AT Medics. AT Medics have contracts to deliver GP services across 19 London boroughs. They have merged with Operose Health, which is the UK arm of Centene, a US healthcare insurance giant.

AT Medics operate the Mitchison Road GP practice as well as Hanley Primary Care Centre. Patient feedback about both practices has been concerning, with local residents complaining that it is difficult to get seen by a GP.

Last week the NHS North Central London Integrated Care Board met to decide whether to renew their Islington contracts with AT Medics:

  • They decided not to renew the contract for Hanley Primary Care Centre.
  • Mitchison Road Surgery will continue to be run by AT Medics but they will need to meet improvement targets.

Healthwatch Chief Executive Emma Whitby said,

"The Integrated Care Board have made a difficult decision, but their process was robust. They considered a great deal of evidence collected over the last 6 years. This included feedback from patients as well as statistical data related to disease prevalence - this can help commissioners to assess whether the people in the community who most need help are receiving the expected levels of support from their GP. It is vital that Islington residents have good access to GP appointments."

Taking up to twelve months, the procurement process will focus on ensuring that the new provider will deliver primary care services at Hanley Primary Care Centre that are accessible and of high quality. The Integrated Care Board is working with the current provider to ensure GP practice services continue uninterrupted in the meantime. The practice will remain open and patients will receive a consistent service.
